Computer workspace. All you need to know to prepare your home office

Ergonomic computer station – what to keep in mind

The ergonomics of your computer workspace is, alongside the proper equipment, the basic element that you should keep in mind when preparing your home office or gaming station. As early as in the planning stage, you should pay particular attention to a few things that will make it easier for you to keep the space tidy and support proper posture at your computer. These are:

  • Adjustable computer chair – long hours of sitting can be murder on the spine, which is why we encourage you to invest in a proper swivel chair that will protect your back in the course of virtual battles. ENDORFY offers chairs that are adjustable in all the crucial spots.
  • Adjustable desk – when choosing a computer desk, it’s a good idea to pay attention not just to its dimensions and the load of the desktop, but also to adjustable height (such as with ENDORFY desks). This might seem unnecessary, but if you share a station with roommates or like to work standing up once in a while, it’s an option well worth considering.
  • Additional accessories – for most of us, planning a computer workspace begins and ends with buying a chair and a desk. But soon, the first scratches on the floor or the cluttered desk (or both!) become a pain. So why not consider more accessories for your home office? We know from experience that it’s good to start by adding a protective floor pad for your swivel chair to your shopping list, as well as a display mount and cable management accessories.

You can learn more about the ergonomics of a computer station from our guide „Gaming desk – best choices for a gamer”.

What should be included in a gaming station

A gamer’s room is a temple dedicated to epic racing and life-or-death duels, each a culmination of many hours spent in front of a computer in an unchanging pose. This is why a properly chosen gaming chair and an adjustable desk are absolutely essential for any gamer’s station (second in importance only to top-notch gaming equipment). It’s a good idea to add a protective floor pad to the mix in order to protect the floor from scratches and spilled energy drinks, as well as a display mount which not only frees up space on the desktop, but also makes it easier to quickly change the screen setup. We know from experience that this option is particularly useful when you share the desk with roommates or when you need to finish up a report for your boss between online bouts.

Home office – inspiration

Wondering how to set up your home office? We know that designing a computer station can awaken a beast in you, which is why we came up with a few hints that will guide you through planning a home office quickly and painlessly. Treat these as a source of inspiration and pick what suits you the best!

  • Start by listing your expectations in order to determine what your workspace should look like. Think about what you will do there and what functions it is meant for (for instance if you want to host an hours-long podcast after work or if your kids will be using it). With such a list, it’ll be easier for you to figure out what furnishings and accessories you will need.
  • Consider the lighting. A desk lamp will work, but equipment with ARGB lighting or a LED strip are a good choice, too. Especially if you like your desktop to sometimes come to life with a multi-color aurora.
  • Protect your workspace. Safety rules do not end at work – grommets to hide stubborn cables, a protective floor pad and a stand for your headphones should be the bare minimum before you even sit down to play your favorite shooter.

FAQ

How do I choose the proper chair for my desk?

A correctly selected chair means more comfort and a healthier back, so it’s good to spend a little more time when choosing the chair’s model and consider every pro and con. While you’re at it, you might ask yourself a few questions that will make the final decision so much easier:

  • Is the chair properly suited for your body frame? This is important not just for the choice of a cylinder with the proper load, but also to fit the particular component parts to your body.
  • Does the chair match the height of your desktop? The ratio between the chair’s and the desktop’s height should allow for a natural hand position. Remember that you should have at least 10 cm of space available between the keyboard and the edge of the desk.
  • Does the upholstery of the chair allow for easy cleaning? The variety of upholstery available for purchase is staggering. You can choose – among other options – leather, mesh, velour or PU leather. We know from experience that the best solution is a chair wholly covered with a breathable material or combination of materials – such as an airy fabric where your body touches the chair and easily cleanable PU leather at the sides.

You can read more about this in our guide „Gaming chairs – what to pay attention to when buying”.

What to keep in mind when planning a home office for 2 people

Arranging a home office that two people will use is a big challenge, especially if they each use the workspace for different purposes. In those circumstances, adjusting the chair or the monitor can turn into a daunting task. This is why one good solution is to buy an adjustable desk that you will be able to instantly fit the user’s height and method of using the desk (either sitting or standing). It’s also worthwhile to invest in a good display mount – this allows for lightning-fast adjustment of a screen (including horizontal vs vertical) depending on the user’s position and what they are doing at the time.

What should a workspace look like?

When you spend a lot of time in front of your computer, you need a comfortable space for both work and play. It’s also nice if it visually matches your home office. To achieve harmony between these two considerations, it’s good to pay attention to a few core principles of designing a workspace:

  • The height of a chair and a desk should support the natural sitting position; there should be a right angle between the upper arm and the forearm.
  • The keyboard’s placement should ensure the best possible support for the hands. To that end, place it about 10 cm away from the desk’s edge.
  • The safe distance from the monitor should be about 50-75 cm. Make sure that its upper edge is no higher than your line of sight (if the computer is used by a few people, you might want to invest in a display mount) – by preventing a backward tilt of the head, you relieve the strain on the spine.
  • The looks of a home office should reflect the interior of the room. Before buying furniture and the computer, it’s good to define the most important elements of the office décor and replicate those in the computer workspace itself.
