Audio accessories – what you need to know
Which is better – mic holder or stand?
A microphone holder is one of the basic tools that support working with sound – it protects the mic from shocks and blocks vibrations from the desktop. Depending on their needs, a user can opt for one of the following three types of stands:
- Microphone arm – attached directly to the desktop (usually with a clamp) with adjustment possible in a few dimensions. This is a good choice, particularly for owners of smaller desks, where every centimeter is precious. At ENDORFY, we give you the option to buy a version with a hidden cable (Studio Boom Arm) or with the option of running the cable along the arm (Streaming Boom Arm).
- Desktop stand – placed directly on top of a desk. This solution is recommended especially for podcasts and video recordings, where the microphone should stay out of sight. Desktop stands from ENDORFY are included with the Axis Streaming Onyx White and Axis Streaming microphones.
- Tripod – a lighter and more handy type of a stand. Due to their small size, tripods are particularly good for small desktops. At ENDORFY, you can buy tripods together with the Solum T and Solum Streaming T microphones.
Microphone stands – which to choose
The first step towards choosing a proper stand is to determine the function it will fulfill – a mic arm may be a good choice for a podcaster but might not be ideal for a streamer who wants a clean frame without any visible gear. This is why before you buy you should judge the microphone on the following principles:
- Stability – a microphone should be motionless to prevent interference when recording. A good stand should also dampen vibrations, which can reduce audio quality.
- Ergonomics – a good stand offers multiple positions for the microphone – not just up-down, but also at selected angles. This allows you to adjust it to your preferences and work mode.
- Level of vibration reduction – a microphone stand should properly reduce the vibrations conducted by, among others, the surface of the desk. Some models (such as those included with the Solum Streaming, Solum Streaming Onyx White and Solum microphone models) are additionally equipped with a pop filter that reduces plosive consonants.
How to assemble a microphone arm
Assembling a mic arm is an easy task. Available for purchase are, among others, easy-to-use models that are fastened directly to the desktop (such as our Streaming Boom Arm and Studio Boom Arm). They come with special screws for quickly assembling the gear with no tools necessary. All you need to do is place it in the designated space and screw it to the desk so that the mic hold is firmly attached to the surface. The whole arrangement is easily adjusted to any desktop thickness.
FAQ
How do I furnish my home recording studio?
When preparing a home recording studio, your priority is sound quality. This is ensured, among other things, by proper soundproofing (you can use special wall mats and soft padding for this), which effectively blocks sounds from the outside while also muffling noises inside.
Good soundproofing is, of course, just the beginning. The heart of a home recording studio is a properly prepared workstation – for a start, a good microphone with headphones, a comfortable chair and a desk for recording gear should be enough. If you’re using multiple monitors and need more space on your desk – this is especially useful if your workspace is small – you could also use a display mount or a separate microphone arm.
I record podcasts with my guests. Do I need a double microphone holder?
If you record podcasts with guests and you’re considering buying a few microphones and a double holder, have we got good news for you! Another solution that works just as well is a bidirectional microphone that captures sound on the opposite sides of its membrane and does it perfectly in all situations where you invite just one guest to your studio.
In the case of a conversation with more people, however, it might be a good idea to invest in an omnidirectional microphone. As the name implies, it records conversations on all sides of its membrane, so every sentence spoken within its range will be properly recorded.
How to pick a mic for streaming
Before you decide on which streaming microphone to buy, you should first determine its intended purposes. This is because equipment for recording podcasts with a group of friends will have different parameters than, for instance, a mic for an ASMR creator. This is why before the purchase, the following elements should be considered:
- Type of microphone – you can choose from single- or multidirectional microphones (including omnidirectional and bidirectional ones). The former are great for solo auditions. Multidirectional microphones, on the other hand, are great when you invite guests to the recording.
- Cable or lack thereof – wireless microphones are a great option for recording outside, when you need your equipment to be convenient and not to constrain you. Wired models, by contrast, are good for home studios where there is no need to constantly be on the move while recording.
- Additional accessories – such as a pop filter blocking so-called plosive consonants or a shock mount to prevent the transfer of vibrations from the desktop. It’s also a good idea to invest in a handy stand or arm to keep the microphone in a single, stable position.
